Shadowgun (Credit: Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET) With the iPhone picking up steam as a gaming platform, one of the biggest announcements for gamers was that the iPhone 4S' graphics would be seven times faster than its predecessor's. Even though no developers have released a game optimized for the device so far (Infinity Blade II is set to launch December 1), I decided to put some of the more high-quality current games side by side on the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S to see if we could spot any difference. The reason for all the extra speed is the iPhone 4S' dual-core A5 processor, which supposedly has enough horsepower to render complex 3D graphics with significantly high frame rates.

Unity Technologies today will show off Unity 3.5, a new version of its game development software designed to match higher-end tools, spread its games' reach to Adobe Systems' Flash Player, and defend the honor of cross-platform programming. The company--profitable and now grown to 150 employees--aims to make it easier for programmers to write games that, once written, work on multiple devices. Applications today can run on foundations such as Windows, Mac OS X, Android, iOS, and Web browsers via the company's plug-in.

Flash brings cross-platform advantages to programmers, letting them write software without having to worry so much about browser compatibility matters. But a wide variety of new Web standards--some now developed with Adobe help--are injecting new life into a plug-in-free version of the Web
